I don’t like the word “minority”.

People are not minorities. People are miracles.

To be conceived, gestate and born alive and healthy is a miracle. To get up every day and go out into a world that was built for you to be oppressed and fail is a miracle yet survive and succeed anyway is a miracle.

There is nothing minor about this.

There is also nothing minor about being a Person of Color. While we may not be the most powerful group in some nations around the world, there are more People of Color in the world than there are White people.

White people are the minority.

Colonization has spread supremacist ideals which lead many to believe the opposite. It is not true.

More than 80% of the WORLD is non-White.

There is nothing minor about this, either.

Stop using “minority” as a word to describe people who are non-White. It perpetuates the ideals of supremacy which continues to allow People of Color to be marginalized, under-represented, stereotyped and oppressed.

We can never overcome our biases and rebuild fair, equitable, inclusive systems if we continue to perpetuate the idea that anyone is minor alongside anyone else.

I hope after 15 weeks of reading posts within the #BlackBlogsMatter challenge that you understand this. If so, “minority” should be no where in your mindset or vocabulary.

I hope after 15 weeks of reading posts within the #BlackBlogsMatter challenge that you are ready to be intersectional and inclusive in all of your work and ways.

I hope after 15 weeks of reading posts within the #BlackBlogsMatter challenge that you’re committed to being more aware and taking decisive action in this direction.

This is what it takes to shift the minority mindset.

It is more than just seeing everyone as equal.

It is about seeing that the primary narrative upon which the systems of our society are built were designed to ensure only a small group of people are allowed to succeed.  It is about accepting that this narrative is a lie and the systems are garbage because of it. It is about knowing the narrative must be destroyed and all systems rebuilt from scratch. It is about working to retrain everyone, starting with yourself.

I know I am. And there’s definitely nothing minor about that.
