Welcome to the #BlackBlogsMatter challenge! Throughout the 28 days of February, my posts will not (necessarily) be about HR, Leadership or Management topics.
Black Girl Magic is a concept and movement started to celebrate the beauty, power and resilience of Black women and to consistently congratulate us on our accomplishments.
Those accomplishments range from winning gold medals in the Olympics to cooking a delicious meal.
Hey. It’s not easy being a Black woman. We need all the accolades we can get.
My favorite quote about Black Girl Magic comes from Jesse Williams’s speech where he won the BET 2016 Humanitarian Award. If you’ve never seen the speech, click HERE and watch.
“Just because we’re magic doesn’t mean we’re not real”
– Jesse Williams
The unadulterated dopeness that is the essence of Black Girl Magic is not easy to achieve or maintain. Like all magic, it requires years of study, commitment to excellence, constant improvement and a little slight of hand.
That slight of hand is where our realness lies. And in our realness, we feel very strongly and deeply.
We feel hurt.
We feel anger.
We feel fear.
We feel overwhelmed.
We feel misunderstood.
We feel unappreciated.
We feel marginalized.
We feel robbed.
We feel unheard.
We feel in danger and endangered.
We hide these emotions beneath our attitude and our ambition and our accomplishments. Because if we ever gave into these feelings, we would explode from rage or breakdown from stress.
Our fellow Black Girl Magicians know this. We know what lies beneath our brilliance. We know the effort it takes for us to accomplish and achieve what looks so easy and effortless to others. We know what it means when one of us makes it.
So we must respect our Magic. Even if we do like it or agree with it, we respect it and support it because we know there is nothing simple or casual about it. And we know we don’t get many opportunities to display it.
But when we do!?!?! It is Awe-inspiring. Classic. Elegant. Exciting. Devine. Glorious. Magnificent. Radiant. Spectacular.
Black Girl Magic is everything! Let’s keep sprinkling that $#!+ everywhere
