Here’s a couple things you should know about me:
Lately, I’ve been accused by my HR friends of being a little stand-offish and unwilling to connect with new people. They accuse me of becoming slightly stale and out of touch, too, because I’m not connecting with people or groups on LinkedIn, following more on Twitter, or friending/liking on Facebook.
They might be right … No New Friends.
“No New Friends” is a song by DJ Khaled featuring rappers Drake and Lil Wayne. It’s basically about how they are focused on working personal goals and supporting friends in accomplishing their goals so they don’t want to spend too much time on anything else … At least, that’s my interpretation of what the song means. Most of the lyrics are unintelligible, really. But it’s catchy.
And, if that’s the message, I can relate. Networking is important. Social media is important … At some point, though, I think your network can over-saturate. You start collecting connections, followers and friends like knick-knacks. There’s quantity but no real quality to what you’ve amassed.
I’ve been feeling that way lately. With the demands of my life, I can barely keep up meaningful connections with my family and the friends I already have. It doesn’t seem fair or appropriate to add more connections, followers and friends on top of that when I can barely find or make time for what I already have. I don’t want my network and social friends to end up being like dusty knick-knacks. I want those connections to have meaning … And that has accidentally on purpose resulted in this “No New Friends” attitude I’m accused of having.
So I say what’s so wrong with “No New Friends”?
